GUWAHATI, Nov 7: Congress MLA from Jaleswar, Aftabuddin Mollah, has been arrested by Dispur Police for his highly offensive, communal, provocative and obnoxious comments made against Hindu priests and ‘Namghoriyas’.

Mollah had in a public meeting in Goalpara district on Nov 4 said that Hindu priests and ‘Namghoriyas’ were involved in crimes like rape.

Mollah’s comment had stirred a massive controversy forcing him to tender an apology.

Earlier today, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had hinted at taking action against the Congress MLA saying that people who make such unparliamentary and communally sensitive statements would not be allowed to go scott free and that law would take its course.

Earlier in the evening, a person from Hatigaon locality of Guwahati had lodged a police complaint against Mollah over his hate speech following which an FIR was lodged against him.

The Congress MLA’s arrest, meanwhile, has been welcomed by people from various parts of the State.
