The intelligence agency of Canada said besides India and China, Russia and Pakistan also have the potential to meddle in the polls
GUWAHATI, March 25: Canada is apprehensive of both China and India trying to interfere in the country’s general elections slated to be held on April 28, the nation’s spy service — Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) — stated on Monday.
The agency also claimed Russia and Pakistan, too, have the potential to meddle in the polls.
While China is perceived as the principal threat of potential interference in the federal election in Canada, Ottawa is also monitoring potential influence operations by other countries, including India.
“The PRC (People’s Republic of China) is highly likely to use AI enabled tools to attempt to interfere with Canada’s democratic process in this current election,” Vanessa Lloyd, deputy director of operations at CSIS, was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.
“We have also seen that the government of India has the intent and capability to interfere in Canadian communities and democratic processes,” Lloyd was said to have added, while also claiming that Russia and Pakistan could potentially conduct foreign interference activities against the country.
Beijing and New Delhi, who have denied earlier allegations of interference, is yet to react to the latest accusations made by the CSIS deputy director.
