GUWAHATI: Massive protests continued across Assam as Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 in Rajya Sabha today.
Protesters that included a large number of college students took to the streets, shouting slogans against the Government and reiterating their opposition to the legislation.
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas besides also resorting to lathi-charge on protesters in Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
The situation in Dibrugarh took a turn for the worse as protesters blocked the NH 37 since early morning hours. Police had to use force to quell protests as cops baton-charged protesters at Bokul and later fired tear gas to clear the arterial highway.
In Guwahati, thousands of students took out protest rallies besides squatting on the busy GS Road. The rush hour morning traffic was brought to a halt as the number of students grew in number.
Police lathi-charged protesters at many places on the GS Road as students, who were shouting slogans against the contentious legislation, refused to end the road blockade.
Security across Assam has been beefed up in the wake of the angry protests that has crippled normal life in the State since yesterday when the entire state came to a grind during the NESO-sponsored 11-hour shutdown.
