Breaking: ULFA-I cadre killed in Patkai Hills gunbattle identified as dreaded militant leader Uday Asom

A hardcore militant of the United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) was shot dead by security forces in a fierce gunbattle in Tinsukia on February 9.

The self-styled surgent major has been identified as Uday Asom alias Uttam Lahon of the prescribed banned outfit. The incident occurred near Margherita town in the Tinsukia district of Assam at Tikak Mulung Parbat.

The entire operation was conducted at the express directive of Assam DGP GP Singh who had also coordinated and supervised the entire operation from Guwahati.

The fierce gunfight broke out between security forces and cadres ULFA-I in Margherita, Assam, in the early hours of February 9.  

According to sources, a group of ULFA cadres (around 7-9 ) were taking shelter in Margherita and Lekhapani PS area for the last 8-10 days. They were planning to kidnap one influential businessman from the Tinsukia district. They were also planning to target DGP G P Singh IPS and IGP NER Jitmol Doley IPS for their consistent action against ULFA probably by launching grenades or setting up IEDs.

However, upon reaching the location, both parties exchanged gunfire, ULFA-I cadre Udai Asom, was killed in the exchange.

Taking the advantage of darkness, other suspected cadres fled from the PO.

According to reports, the firing started in the wee hours of Feb 9.
