GUWAHATI: Bihu functions won’t be allowed in those districts of Assam having more than 300 COVID19 positive patients. From Tuesday, Bihu functions have been cancelled in Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Dibrugarh.

Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup (Rural) have recorded around 2600 COVID19 positive cases in the past few days. This massive surge has resulted in cancellation of Bihu functions organised by Brihotor Ganeshpara and West Guwahati Bihu committees.

The district administrations of respective districts have put restrictions on organising Bihu functions where there is a spike in COVID19 positive cases.

“We appeal that people follow the rules and restrictions. We are discussing other issues with AASU. I will be glad if they postpone or cancel the programmes. That would be a matured step to do,” said Pallav Gopal Jha, Deputy Commissioner Dibrugarh District.

Welcoming the Assam health department’s steps, all Rongali Bihu Sanmilan programmes have been cancelled by Sodou Barpathar Yuvak Sangha in Dibrugarh. The Bihu committee cancelled their programmes on 21st and 22nd April.

“For now we have cancelled our programmes till the end of Bohag month. Our working committee took this decision after reports of rapid spread of Coronavirus in the state,” said a Bihu committee member.

“Bihu will come again but such a dangerous situation won’t come always. We have to think how we can save our community from this Coronavirus pandemic and how we can save our lives. We will definitely celebrate Bihu in future if we survive this situation. The safety of the local population is supreme and so, to ensure this safety, we are cancelling our Bihu programmes,” said a local resident from Dibrugarh.

In river-island Majuli, Garmur Rongali Bihu Sanmilani has cancelled their evening programmes and will observe a low profile Bihu.

“Our programmes will be conducted only during the day and we have cancelled the night schedule,” said an organiser in Majuli.

Similarly Sepon Kendriya Rongali Bihu Sanmilani has cancelled their Bihu programmes scheduled for 26th and 27th April.
