Basavaraj Bommai takes oath as Karnataka chief minister

Guwahati: BJP leader Basavaraj S Bommai took oath as the 23rd chief minister of Karnataka on Wednesday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) legislature party elected Basavaraj Bommai as the successor of BS Yediyurappa who resigned from the top post on Monday.

Bommai was announced as the new Chief Minister of the state following a party meeting at a private hotel in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

In the ceremony at the Glass House of the Karnataka Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy.

Apart from being a close associate of Yediyurappa, Bommai is the son of former state chief minister and ex-Union minister, the late SR Bommai. He was the home minister of Karnataka during Yediyurappa’s tenure.

Bommai also offered prayers at Bhagavan Sri Maruthi Temple in Bengaluru ahead of his swearing-in.
