Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi turns 33

Guwahati: Argentina superstar and Barcelona captain Lionel Messi turned 33 on Wednesday as he celebrated his 33rd birthday by registering his 250th assist against Athletic Bilbao.

However, Messi again wasn’t able to score his milestone 700th career goal for club and country. He came close twice with shots that just missed the target late in the second half.

This is the 5th consecutive season that Messi has 15+ goals and 15+ assists for Barcelona. Since the 2006-07 season, only four other players have managed to do so in a single campaign.

Rakitic scored less than 10 minutes after coming off the bench, firing a right-foot shot into the corner after an assist by Lionel Messi.

Messi’s 250th assist helped Barcelona earn a hard-fought 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday to put the pressure back on Real Madrid in the Spanish league.

Messi holds the record of winning the Ballon d’or record 6 times and he has captivated soccer fans and has earned the status of a legend at a very young age.

Every time he walks into the park, we keep expecting magic. So does the opposition defenders who are constantly at the receiving end of numerous nutmegs and his masterful moves.

You don’t want to be an opposition defender when he is on the ball, for you will have to hide the joy of watching the left footer’s love affair with the ball.

Over the years, the football fraternity has been amazed and has heaped praise on the young Argentine. At a time when people are running out of superlatives, Messi’s counterparts haven’t stopped themselves from admiring and applauding his greatness.
