A top Assam Police officer has been convicted in a case of torture of a murder accused and handed over a two-year jail term along with a fine of Rs 50,000. Amitabh Sinha, presently the Superintendent of Police of Goalpara district, was convicted of using ‘third degree’ on Gurmeet Singh, an accused in the murder of a transporter inside a Gurdwara at Basistha, by the Kamrup Additional District & Sessions Court, Guwahati. Sinha was then the Additional Police Commissioner of Guwahati when the ‘third degree’ interrogation took place.
The present Goalpara SP was, however, granted bail after his lawyers moved a bail petition in court on his behalf.
