Assam to continue its drive against drunk driving during Bihu: CM Sarma

Guwahati: After the huge success of drink and drive initiative by the Assam government on New Year’s Eve, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that he will be continuing the drive against drunk driving during the upcoming Bihu festival in the state.

Chief Minister Sarma informed that the same drunken driving rule will be followed on Uruka night too in order to avoid road accidents. Uruka is usually celebrated on January 13.

He added that just like New Year, people should avoid drunk driving and to ensure this, police will be on constant monitoring.

He also said that there was no issue with people celebrating but the driver of the vehicle should be sober and should not drink even a drop and strict actions will be taken against those who are found violating the rules.

Guwahati achieved the distinction of registering not even a single accident on Friday night, a development which has come after the Chief Minister Sarma appealed to the public for restraint and issued instructions to the administration to take appropriate action to prevent mishaps which used to occur routinely as a result of revelry to mark New Year’s Eve.

To look into the operations carried out by the Assam Police on drink and drive case, Chief Minister Sarma took stock of the drive in Guwahati on December 31 night.

CM Sarma visited Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Chandmari, Zoo road and Ganeshguri to review the drive initiated by the government to prevent accident cases.

And the netizens loved the effort of Chief Minister Sarma in taking the initiative by himself and coming on the roads  of Guwahati on Friday night to boost the morale of police and transport department personnel who were on duty to curb traffic violations.
