GUWAHATI: Like every year spring has arrived in the state, but with no Rongali Bihu festivity. As Assam has been fighting against COVID19, the state has shunned Bihu merriment this time. Though today is the ‘Uruka’ of Rongali Bihu, there has been no hustle-bustle for Bihu preparations among the people.
Amid lockdown people of Assam will observe Goru Bihu on Monday with traditional fervour keeping in mind all the precautions needed to prevent Coronavirus. Bihu Committees of the state have already cancelled their cultural functions. The Assam Government had asked the Bihu Committees to hoist the Bihu flag with five people of the committee. It also directed not to organise any cultural or public function.
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided not to hold its popular Mukoli Bihu at Judges’ Field in Guwahati. The Guwahati unit of AASU has been organising Mukoli Bihu – an open field celebration of Bihu in the Judges’ Field since 1982. The organization will not even hoist the Bihu flag at the venue this year.
AASU has also urged the people of Assam to celebrate Bihu by remaining at home.
On the other hand, Sattras in Majuli will deviate from 500-year old tradition of Bihu celebration. Though Bihu will be observed with religious fervour, there will be no performance of traditional dances at many sattras in the river island.
