Assam: Opposition members disrupt Governor’s speech over Maha MLA’s ‘dog meat eating’ remark

PUBLISHED:

The budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began at Dispur on Friday (March 10).

The session will continue till April 5 and there will be 14 sittings.

State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will table the state budget for 2023-24 on March 16.

On the first day of the budget session, the opposition MLA disrupted Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria’s speech in the assembly over a Maharashtra MLA’s remarks.

Because of the disruption, Kataria had to restrict his speech to 15 minutes, as the opposition MLAs stood up and shouted slogans, seeking to know what action has been taken by the Assam Government against the Maharashtra MLA.

Earlier on March 4, Janashakti Party MLA Bachchu Kadu had reportedly said in the Maharashtra Assembly that people of Assam consume dog meat and stray dogs should be sent to Assam to control their rising population.

On Friday, Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Rokibul Hussain along with Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi raised the matter as the Governor began to speak.

The newly appointed Assam Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria in his maiden speech in the assembly appealed to all members of the house to work together for development of the state.

He also said that due to efforts of the Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all major insurgent groups have either laid down arms or joined the peace process.
