PUBLISHED:

Union Minister and BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal cast his vote in Dibrugarh, Assam today, marking the start of the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections.

Sonowal is contesting against Lurinjyoti Gogoi from the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), from the Dibrugarh constituency.

“It is really a good sign that people are coming out in such a large number. People’s spontaneous participation will strengthen democracy,” Sonowal, the BJP candidate of Dibrugarh, said after casting his vote at a polling booth in Laxminath Bezbarua Bhawan in Chowkiding.

People are happy under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and that is why they are coming out in large numbers, he claimed.

The BJP has chosen Sonowal over sitting MP Rameshwar Teli. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Manoj Dhanowar is also contesting.

Voting for five seats in Assam started at 7 am today in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga, Sonitpur and Lakhimpur. Over 8.647 million people are eligible to vote in 10,001 polling booths across Assam.

The voters will determine the fate of 35 candidates including Sonowal, his rival Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress. The BJP is contesting all five seats in the first phase, the Congress in four, the AAP in two and the Trinamool Congress, the Assam Jatiya Parishad and CPI in one each.
