Assam: Indo-Bhutan Friendship Mela begins in Baksa

GUWAHATI: In a move to strengthen the relationship between India and Bhutan, the 10th Indo-Bhutan Friendship Mela–cum-68th Subankhata Magh Mela began from today at Subankhata under Baksa district.

The fair got underway today with the ‘Kurmalaga’ (guests) mingling with the Indians residing across Indo-Bhutan border areas of Assam.

People from six Bhutanese districts have reportedly taken part in this fair. The fair which aims at promoting bilateral trade and cultural exchanges between the two neighbouring nations will continue till January 24. Besides local people of Subankhata, several traders from Bhutan have put their stalls at Indo-Bhutan Friendship Mela.

“We have got good response from the people. There will be a free screening of Kohinoor Theatre at the fair,” said Phalindra Kumar Basumataray, Member of Council Legislative Assembly (MCLA) of Bodoland Territorial Council.

“We the people of Bhutan and India are the messengers of peace, harmony and unity. We have been participating in this mela for last ten years. It is a grand and successful event. We get together in a year and enjoy our friendship and harmony,” said a representative of Bhutan.
