Assam: Former Congress leader Rana Goswami to join BJP today

In a boost for the Assam Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), ahead of the Lok Sabha elections Senior leader and former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Rana Goswami is all set to join the saffron party today.

Goswami tendered his resignation from the party on Wednesday.

Soon after sending the resignation letter to Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, he went to New Delhi where he meet BJP president JP Nadda.

On Tuesday, when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was asked about the speculations of Goswami switching sides he said, “Goswami is a powerful leader of the Congress and if he joins the BJP, I will welcome it.”

Rana Goswami, a highly influential Congress leader from Assam, previously served as the Member of Parliament from the Jorhat constituency in Assam.

Earlier this month, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha resigned as state Congress working president and along with another party legislator, Basanta Das, expressed support for the BJP-led government’s “development agenda”.
