GUWAHATI: Former president of All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) Ashini Chetia passed away on Thursday night at a private hospital in Guwahati.
The former ATASU leader who joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently was battling with cancer.
The untimely demise of the leader has been widely mourned.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal took to Twitter to express his grief over Chetia’s death.
“Saddened to know of the sudden demise of student leader, former ATASU advisor & president and @BJP4Assam karyakarta Ashini Chetia. Praying for the departed soul, I offer my deepest condolences to his bereaved family members,” Sonowal wrote.

Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled the death of Chetia.
Sarma termed the death of the leader as an irreparable loss to the state.
