Assam Election: Sibasagar, Mariani, Duliajan and Naharkatia turn high profile seats in first phase

GUWAHATI: In the first phase of Assam Legislative Assembly Elections four constituencies viz. Sibasagar, Mariani, Duliajan and Naharkatia have managed to garner a lot of attention among the voters. These constituencies are considered as high profile in the first phase due to the heavy-weight contesting candidates.

Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal and Lurinjyoti Gogoi of Assam Jatiya Parishad are the two leaders whose fate will be decided by the voters. Both leaders are from newly-formed regional parties and have a fan following mostly in Upper Assam.

Akhil Gogoi will contest from Sibasagar and Mariani. On the other hand AJP president, Lurinjyoti Gogoi will contest from Duliajan and Naharkatia.

Congress senior leader from tea tribes Rupjyoti Kurmi will face Akhil Gogoi in Mariani. “I will win with more votes this time. My mother Rupam Kurmi was three times MLA from Mariani constituency and I have myself represented the seat three times. My objective is to work for the people and no other force can win here. I will win with over ten thousand votes this time.

In Sibasagar the new-entrant Akhil Gogoi is not a factor says Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Surabhi Rajkonwar. Congress candidate Subhramitra Gogoi feels that his opponent will be the BJP candidate and not Akhil Gogoi. “His name is not in the voter’s list of Sibasagar constituency. His party has no recognition and so there is nothing to say.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi is sure of his and his party’s win and claims that they will form the government. “The citizens are aware whom to vote this time. Look at Bihar’s survey and see who formed the government there. So, this time it would be a people’s government,” said Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Duliajan BJP incumbent MLA Terash Gowalla wished Lurinjyoti Gogoi but claimed that it will be the BJP that will have the last laugh. “He is dependent on AASU that is a non-political organization so will win,” said Gowalla.
