Assam bids tearful adieu to celebrated litterateur Atulananda Goswami

GUWAHATI, July 27: Eminent litterateur Atulananda Goswami, who passed away at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) early Wednesday morning following age-related complications, was given a tearful adieu with people, especially literature lovers, mourning his demise and terming his passing away as an irreparable void for Assamese literature.

Known for his works like ‘Namghoria’, ‘Hamdoi Pulor Jon’, ‘Raajpat’, ‘Polatok’, ‘Seneh Jorir Ganthi’ etc., the last rites of the celebrated author was held at the Nabagraha crematorium and was attended by a host of his admirers and followers besides family members and relatives.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences at the literary doyen’s demise saying that his contributions towards enriching Assamese literature will always be remembered.

“Deeply saddened at the passing away of eminent litterateur Atulananda Goswami. His contributions towards Assamese literature and society will always be remembered. I pray to God for eternal peace of his soul and offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members,” Chief Minister Sarma wrote on Twitter.

Born in 1935, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 2006 for his novel ‘Seneh Jorir Ganthi’. He was conferred with the prestigious Assam Valley Literary Award in 2013. The Assam Sahitya Sabha also bestowed him with the Ambikagiri Raichoudhury award for his acclaimed novel ‘Namgharia’.
