Assam: All 12 given life imprisonment in Jhankar Saikia lynching case

Guwahati: The Diphu District Sessions Court finally delivered its verdict in the heart-wrenching Jhankar Saikia lynching case. All the 12 convicted of the 16 accused have been given life time imprisonment punishment.

Out of total 16 accused the court acquitted 4 persons, including two police men.

On 24th February, Diphu district court convicted 12 accused in the lynching case and kept the quantum of punishment to be announced on 28th February. 

Jhankar Saikia, a college student was mercilessly killed in front of his father by a group of auto-rickshaw drivers on June 25, 2013 in Diphu, Karbi Anglong. The mob beat-up Jhankar and his father Hiren Saikia when they refused to pay Rs. 10 more than the original fare of Rs. 20. Critically injured Jhankar was shifted to a private hospital in Diphu where he succumbed to his injuries on July 1, 2013.

The 12 convicts who are given life imprisonment are Biswajit Hanse, Sarsing Teron, Robinson Teron, Sanjay Rongphar, Bikram Tisso, Enush Timung, Longsing Teron, Binong Terang, Sarlongbi Terang, Philipson Taro, Hitesh Rabha and Mangal Sing Rongphar.

Meanwhile, the district court in its final judgment acquitted four persons, Sarthe Bey and Dilip Teron including Assam Police havildar Harun Bora and assistant sub-inspector Ramesh Chandra Nath.
