Assam: AIUDF threatens to leave Mahagathbandhan on Congress’ CAA stand

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) general secretary Aminul Islam has threatened to break its alliance with Congress if the national party does not clarify its stand on Citizenship Amendment Bill. Also AIUDF is unhappy that the Congress has accepted the application from the candidates in all the 126 constituencies.

Earlier on Sunday, former president of Indian National Congress and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi attended a public meeting at the Sivasagar Boarding Ground donning anti-CAA Gamusa.  While Sushmita Dev, the All India Women’s Congress president and Barak’s Congress leader, refrained from accepting the anti-CAA Gamusa.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Congress leader’s behavior.

Reacting to this in front of the media, MLA Islam said that the first condition of the grand alliance is to oppose ‘CAA’. Each of the parties in the grand alliance must first oppose CAA.

“Everyone should consider opposing ‘CAA’ as a common agenda. In this context, the Congress will have to call for consensus first. If any Congress leader in the Barak Valley supports CAA, then the Congress should expel him or her from the party if necessary. No leader of any party can support CAA”, said Islam.

Aiming at the leadership of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, MLA Islam said that the first condition of the grand alliance was the “Anti-CAA” position. And in this case, the Congress has to get rid of the dilemma.

“And  if by any chance the Congress is still in the dilemma and it supports CAA, then the AIUDF will not ally with the Congress. The BJP had come to power in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections because of the wrong decision taken by the Congress on the alliance,” added Islam.

It is pertinent to note that a few days ago; MLA Islam also questioned the role of the Congress in the alliance.

The Congress, AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and the Regional People’s Front have formed a grand alliance with the aim of resisting the BJP in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
