Ajit Bhuyan’s candidature from Congress, AIUDF almost finalised

GUWAHATI: The candidature of senior journalist cum activist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan for Rajya Sabha polls in Assam has almost been finalised by Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Bhuyan has already collected his nomination forms from Assam Legislative Assembly.

AIUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal has made it clear that the common candidate from Congress and AIUDF would be from a non-political background. According to sources, the two parties would choose a candidate who took part actively in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act movement.

Reportedly, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan’s candidature was finalised at a meeting held at Delhi residence of Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal.

Significantly, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that Sadin-Pratidin group owner Jayanta Baruah contacted him over phone.

“He didn’t tell me about the Rajya Sabha seat. But I think he is interested,” Gogoi said.

Earlier also, Tarun Gogoi mentioned Baruah’s names on several occasions.

The other possible contenders Gogoi named were journalist turned activist Adip Kumar Phukan and senior advocate Kamal Nayan Choudhury.
