Assam: AIUDF to support Congress in Rajya Sabha Polls

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: After a long tussle between the two parties, Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has decided to support Congress candidate in the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls to be held on March 31.

AIUDF which fought the last state polls with Congress was demanding the latter to allow its candidate in one of the two Rajya Sabha seats and asked it to back AIUDF’s candidate.

However, the change in decision came after AIUDF chief Ajmal met All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Sonia Gandhi to settle the confusion.

Earlier, AIUDF asked the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) to field a minority candidate.

However, Assam Congress has not yet fixed its candidature yet and has been waiting for the high command’s instructions.

In Assam, the term of two Rajya Sabha members from Congress- Ranee Nara and Ripun Bora will be expiring in April.

While the last date of filing nominations was fixed on March 21, the counting of votes will be done on the same day of the voting.

Rajya Sabha members are elected by a single transferable vote by state legislatures on the principle of proportional representation.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)  Assam president Bhabesh Kalita said that the saffron camp would announce its candidates on March 20.
