Ahoms are not indigenous, Miya Muslims are: Aminul Islam

GUWAHATI: AIUDF MLA of Assam’s Dhing constituency has sparked another controversy saying that Ahoms are not indigenous people in Assam.  Islam claimed that Bengali-speaking Miya Muslims who migrated from East Pakistan or erstwhile Bengal province belong to the indigenous community of the state.

Addressing a public meeting at Moirabari, Dhing legislator Aminul Islam said, “Ahoms came from Yunnan province of China-Myanmar boder. That province was never a part of India. They came from a foreign land.”

“Our ancestors came from a district which was a part of undivided India. Why we are not indigenous?” Islam stated.

The controversial remarks of the AIUDF MLA outraged different sections of the society since Chaolung Sukaphaa and other kings of the historic Ahom Kingdom are remembered with reverence for their role in forming ‘Bor Asom’ or ‘Greater Assam’.
