Guwahati: ABVP is not the students wing of BJP, has even right to protest against Govt: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Amid the row over the Government’s decision to introduce English as medium of instruction in Science and Mathematics in Government-run schools from Class 3 and the reported opposition of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to it, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said ABVP has no relation with the BJP and that the students’ body can even launch a democratic protest against the Government if they desire to do so.

“ABVP is not part of the BJP and is in no way related to the party. They can protest against the Government if they want. They can even ask people to not vote for me if they want,” CM Sarma said.

The Chief Minister’s reaction comes after the student organization said it is in favour of Assamese language as medium of instruction in Science and Mathematics in government-run schools in the state.

Earlier this month, the state government had taken a decision to introduce the English language as the medium of instruction in Science and Maths from Classes 3 to 10 in state-run schools.
