GUWAHATI, Jan 11: The All Assam Students’ Union has decided to skip Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s meeting with the high-level committee formed to look into implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The meeting will take place in New Delhi tomorrow (Jan 12).
AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya told News Live that the students’ body will skip tomorrow’s meeting to protest the Centre’s move to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act from yesterday (Jan 10).
“The Central Government had formed a high-level committee under Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma to look into the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The AASU was included in the committee. We do want constational safeguards for the indigenous Assamese people. However, we have decided to skip tomorrow’s meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a delegation of the high-level committee in protest against the Government’s move to enforce the Citizenship (Amendment) Act even when the Supreme Court was hearing petitions challenging the said Act,” Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya told News Live.
He, however, announced that the AASU will continue to extend all-possible support to the Home Ministry-constituted high-level committee.
The provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act came into effect from Friday after a gazette notification was issued by the Union Home Ministry.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of the section 1 of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (47 of 2019), the Central government hereby appoints the 10th day of January, 2020, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the MHA notification issed on Friday stated.
The Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by Parliament on Dec 11 last year and it became a law after receiving the President’s assent on Dec 14.
