In one of the biggest twists in the declaration of Army veteran Mohammad Sana Ullah as a foreigner (Bangladeshi) by the foreigners’ tribunal, the police officer (now retired) who had questioned him about his antecedants following a complaint says the person whose statements he had recorded was not a defence personnel but a labourer.
In an exclusive interview to News Live’s Chief Managing Editor Syed Zarir Hussain, Chandramal Das — the investigating officer who recorded Sana Ullah’s statement — said he had never questioned the Army veteran who has now been declared a foreigner and sent to the detention camp in Goalpara.

“The person whose statements I had recorded is not the Army veteran who was declared a foreigner and sent to the detention centre. The person whom I interrogated, recorded statement and took the thumb impression was not a defence personnel but a labourer with the same name,” Das said.
Das, who is now retired, said that he is ready to cooperate with investigating officials amid the nationwide outrage the issue has caused after the incident came to light.

Meanwhile, a petition has already been filed in Gauhati High Court challenging the order of the foreigners’ tribunal.
Mohammad Sana Ullah, a retired Indian army official and a serving Assam policeman, was on Wednesday (May 29) sent to a detention camp after being declared a foreigner.
Ullah, 52, hailing from near Chaygaon joined the Indian army in 1987 and retired as an honorary captain in 2017.
“After I retired from the army, I joined the Assam police in its border wing and am still serving as a sub inspector. This is my fate today that I have been declared a foreigner whimsically,” he said.
“This is the reward I got after serving for 30 years in the Indian army. I am heartbroken. I am an Indian, very much an Indian and will forever remain an Indian,” Sana Ullah said as he was shoved inside a police vehicle on way to the detention camp.

The Army veteran further said he had passed his 10th board examinations from his village school in 1985 and possesses the original certificate from the government of Assam.
