GUWAHATI: Birubala Rabha who has been fighting relentlessly against witch-hunting in Assam has been honoured with Padma Shri for her social works.
Rabha is among the eight recipients of this year’s Padma Shri from the northeastern state of Assam. The central government announced the Padma awards on the eve of Republic Day.
Birubala who hails from lower Assam’s Goalpara district has been running an organisation called Mission Birubala that spreads awareness against witch hunting. She was instrumental in the Assam government passing the Prevention of and Protection from Witch Hunting Act, 2015.
