GUWAHATI: Today is a significant day for Indian democracy. Every year, January 25 is observed as National Voters’ day in India. This historic day is celebrated to mark the commemoration of the Election Commission of India. The prestigious commission was established in 1950, only a year before the first Indian General elections were held in 1951.

According to a report in Bar and Bench, so far 17 general elections have been held in India, in 74 years of Independence. National voter’s day 2021, is being observed to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process.

“I congratulate all the citizens on ‘National Voters’ Day’ and hope that together we will continue to contribute to strengthen democracy in our country,” said president  Ramnath Kovind in a tweet.

“National Voters Day is an occasion to appreciate the remarkable contribution of the EC to strengthen our democratic fabric and ensure smooth conduct of elections. This is also a day to spread awareness on the need of ensuring voter registration, particularly among the youth,” PM Narendra Modi tweeted.

The theme for this year’s NVD, ‘Making Our Voters Empowered, Vigilant, Safe and Informed’, envisages active and participative voters during elections. It also focuses on the ECI’s commitment towards conducting elections safely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The spirit of democracy lies in the voice of its people, which is empowered when they have right to vote. On #NationalVotersDay2021, let’s all pledge to raise awareness on voting and to make a voter feel safe & informed,” Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
