Uncertainty looms over Majuli Raas festival in Assam

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: Uncertainty is looming over the famous Raas festival in Majuli, the first river island district of the country due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The district administration has recently held a meeting with more than 50 Raas organising committees in the river island to discuss the measures to be taken in light of the pandemic.

The district administration informed the committees about the COVID-19 protocols which do not allow children and senior citizens to take part in the Raas programmes. On the other hand, many committees have expressed their inability to organise the festival.

“If the government relaxes some COVID-19 protocols, then it would be convenient for us to host the festival,” said a local resident.

The Raas festival in Majlui is one of the major attractions of Assam Tourism which attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists every year. The river island is a home to several historic Sattras, the most significant places of worship in neo-Vaishnavite culture of Assam.
