GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has been undergoing treatment at Down Town Hospital in Guwahati since Friday night. According to the doctors, the health condition of Mahanta is now stable. The former chief minister was admitted to the hospital after he had suffered a mild stroke.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, minister Keshab Mahanta and other top leaders of the party visited the hospital to take stock of Mahanta’s health.

“No one has been allowed to meet him. We have met the superintendent and the doctors. They informed us that he is stable,” said Atul Bora.

The former chief minister has been kept under the constant observation in intensive care unit (ICU).

Mahanta (68) is the founder president of the AGP which won the 1985 elections. Mahanta became the CM at the age of 33. He was the youngest CM in India at that time.

The AGP lost the next elections but Mahanta returned as the CM for the second time when the regional party wrested power from the Congress in 1996.
