Republic Day celebrated in Assam

Along with the rest of the country, Assam celebrated the 70th Republic Day with the tricolour unfurled across the State that was followed by impressive marchpasts and cultural programmes. Celebrations were peaceful with security beefed up for the occasion.

Governor Jagdish Mukhi hosited the national flag at the central Republic Day function at Khanapara in Guwahati.

Prior to hoisting of the national flag, Governor Mukhi paid tributes before the portrait of Dr Bhupen Hazarika who was conferred the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna by the central government on the eve of Republic Day.

Prof Mukhi highlighted various developmental schemes initiated by the Sarbananda Sonowal government in the State.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated that the 70th Republic Day was very significant for Assam following the Government’s decision to confer Bharat Ratna on Dr Bhupen Hazarika. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Assam”.

Chief Minister Sonowal and Governor Mukhi also presented the Republic Day Journalism Award to veteran journalist Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty.

Republic Day was also celebrated across the State with the tricolour hoisted at various places.

Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the national flag at Morigaon and took the salute of a marchpast by various police bands, NCC units and school students.
