Assam: Rhino found dead in Kaziranga

GUWAHATI: A rhinoceros was found dead at the edge of the Deopani river inside the Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Friday. The rhino had been straying in the Bandardubi area since July 17 and drew attention of the local residents as well as park authorities.

However, the staff of Dusuti camp found the rhino dead on Friday morning inside the park.

“The cause of death of rhino is ascertained as old aged sickness. All available veterinary care was resorted to ailing rhino. We lost him inspite of our best effort and care,” said Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve authorities in a statement.

The national park has been severely hit by the third wave of floods in the year. According to reports, so far, 127 animals have died in the Kazirnaga National Park. 

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed recently to the park’s director P Sivakumar, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton expressed concern and distress over the devastation and death of animals in Kaziranga.
