Citizenship bill | AASU-led conglomerate stages protests

PUBLISHED:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 28 other groups and organizations took out rallies across the State voicing their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and warning the State and the central government of disastrous consequences if they went ahead with the proposed legislation.

Leaders and activists of the AASU and other groups and organizations took out protest marches across Assam, accusing the Sarbananda Sonowal-led State Government of submitting itself to the central government over the citizenship bill issue.

“We will continue to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and won’t compromise with the issue. We warn both the State and the Central governments that people of Assam will not sit silent if any move is made to turn the bill into a legislation,” an AASU leader told NEWS LIVE in Dibrugarh.

AASU and 28 other organizations have been voicing their opposition to the bill that seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, and provide citizenship to migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian facing persecution in the three nations.
