GUWAHATI: Another brutal incident of mob lynching has shaken the conscience of the people in Assam. The incident took place at Mariani in upper Assam’s Jorhat district on Friday. A group of nearly 50 people had beaten to death a youth named Debasish Gogoi following a road accident in a tea garden. On the other hand, another youth identified as Aditya Das is undergoing treatment after he was seriously injured in the mob attack.
According to reports, the incident took place when the two friends—Debasish and Aditya were returning from Gabharu Parbat, a tourist site in the area. They met with an accident in a tea garden and their two-wheeler slightly hit two local women. Following that a group of around 50 people gathered and started two beat the two youths. The mob continued to beat them even after father and elder sister of Debasish arrived on the spot.
While Debasish Gogoi succumbed to his injuries later, Aditya Das is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
“They beat us brutally and snatched away our mobile phones. There were a lot of people,” said Aditya who survived the mob attack.
Meanwhile, police has arrested four accused in connection with the incident. The incident has sparked outrage across the State and several organisations have been demanding justice for the victims.
