GUWAHATI: As the COVID19 crisis is looming over the state, the Assam Government has appealed Bihu committees of the state not to organise any cultural function during Rongali Bihu. After attending the cabinet meeting on Tuesday health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma urged the Bihu Committees to celebrate Bihu by hiosting the flag with 5 members of the committee.

“I humbly request every Bihu Committee to conclude the Bihu programme by hiosting the flag with five people and singing ‘Sreemoyee Axomir xeetol Bukut Uthe’ song. They should not organise any stage programme,” Dr. Sarma said.

He also urged the people belonging to Muslim and Christain communities to observe Shab-e-Barat and Good Friday from home. Shab-e-Barat and Good Friday are scheduled to be held on April 9 and 10 respectively.

Earlier, the Bihu committees in Guwahati decided not to organise any cultural programmes in the upcoming Bohag Bihu. The decision was taken on March 20 by a coordination committee of 26 Bihu committees in Guwahati.

“We have cancelled all the cultural programmes to avoid mass gathering. Because tens of thousands gather to enjoy Bihu functions. If possible, only the rituals will be observed in the Sankranti morning. The decision was taken at a meeting at New Guwahati Bihu Committee auditorium in the presence of representatives from 26 Bihu committees of Guwahati. We should take care of the health of the citizens as well as the artistes,” said Kailash Sarma, a functionary of Latasil Bihu Committee.
