GUWAHATI: In a bid to make the city more environmentally friendly, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) under ATAL MISSION FOR REJUVENATION AND URBAN TRANSFORMATION is soon (by June) going to introduce three-cycle tracks and cycle sharing in Guwahati.

Anyone can rent a cycle after paying a fee of Rs. 10 per hour.

The authorities have taken this step keeping in mind the difficulties faced by cyclists. The budget of the total scheme is Rs. 3 crore. The project will be introduced at Assam Engineering Institute, Guwahati Zoo and Gauhati University.

A total of 300 cycles will be made available for commuters under this scheme. Some of these cycles will be purchased at around Rs. 60,000 with an inbuilt GPS system.

Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority is implementing this scheme to reduce the ongoing pollution issue in the city.
“Public cycle sharing project would do wonders on the road as people would resort to cycling down the last mile than walk to their destinations,” said a cyclist.
It is to be mentioned that on December 2019, Guwahati got its first cycle track at Dakhingaon-Sawkuchi Stretch.

The public bicycle sharing system is very popular in about 300 cities across the world including major cities of China, New York, London, Oslo, Barcelona and others.
