Arrested youth escapes from custody, ‘commits suicide’; family cries foul

PUBLISHED:

A 22-year-old person allegedly committed suicide after he managed to escape from Panikhaiti Police out-post early Wednesday morning. Chandan Bharali, hailing from Chhaygaon, was arrested on Sunday (Aug 5) on the basis of a complaint filed by a girl and her father.

However, he managed to reportedly pip the only on-duty home guard late last night and was found hanging from a tree only 100 metres away from the police outpost.

Meanwhile, Chandan’s family members cried foul over his mysterious death and accused police of murdering him and trying to cover-up the incident by terming it to be a suicide case.

“It’s a cold-blooded murder by Panikhaiti police. Why will anybody commit suicide by escaping from police custody? He was framed in the case and killed by police,” a relative said, and questioned as to why he was not produced in court and kept at the police out-post that even did not have a lock-up.

Incidentally, police sent the body for post-mortem and did not even wait for family members to arrive.

“We want justice. There should be a proper inquiry. There can be no justification to police sending the body for post mortem even before the arrival of family members,” another relative said.
