Guwahati, Dec 21: With the onset of winter, the markets in Guwahati have been flooded with winter wear from outside the state. Every year, traders from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan and other states of India arrive in the city to sell winter clothes.
With the mercury dipping, traders particularly from Nepal, Bhutan Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal have started setting up their shops on the footpaths and other market areas of Guwahati.
During this period, these roadside stalls at various areas in the city like Fancy Bazaar, Paltan Bazaar, Ganeshguri, Maligaon, Panbazaar, Jalukbari, Down Town, Noonmati, Narengi, Hatigaon, Panjabari, Six Mile, Bashistha, Khanapara, Bamunimaidam become centre of attraction for buyers looking for sweaters, jackets, shawls, caps, socks etc. These traders provide new, fashionable varieties at best rates which draw a large number of Guwahati residents to them.
However, a section of shopkeepers from Nepal and Arunachal Pradesh said that unlike earlier, this year the business is not satisfactory because of the recent unrest. “This year, the response from the customers is not satisfactory,” said a shopkeeper.
