Manipur: JAC Calls 24-Hour Strike Over Death of Khoisnam Sanajaoba in Custody

PUBLISHED:

JAC Calls 24-Hour Strike Over Death of Khoisnam Sanajaoba in Custody: In a strong move demanding justice, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called for a 24-hour statewide strike in Manipur over the shocking custodial death of Khoisnam Sanajaoba. The strike will be in effect from midnight of April 24 to midnight of April 25, 2025.

Why is the JAC protesting?

The JAC is very upset that the Governor Ajay Bhalla and the Manipur Government did not respond to their earlier demands. They had submitted a memorandum on April 17, asking for action and gave a 5-day deadline. But nothing was done.

Before this strike, the JAC had also held a sit-in protest to raise their voice. They are now urging common people, Meira Paibis (women activists), and Civil Society Organisations to join the strike and support their cause.

What happened to Khoisnam Sanajaoba?

As per reports from the JAC, Sanajaoba was a village volunteer who was arrested by the Imphal East Commando team on March 31. He died while in custody on April 13. The JAC strongly believes this was a custodial death and is demanding a CBI inquiry to ensure a fair and clear investigation.

Police version is different

On the other hand, Manipur Police have a different story. They say Sanajaoba was not in police custody, but in judicial custody. He was sent to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa on April 10, along with four others. They were all arrested for alleged links with an underground group called KCP Noyon (MLF).

Police say that Sanajaoba had a medical issue and was taken to JNIMS Hospital in Porompat, where he died on April 13, despite being treated. They claim there was no foul play and that the death happened due to his existing health problem.

Public reaction and next steps

The situation has created a lot of tension and emotional response across Manipur. Many people are angry and heartbroken, especially because they feel justice is being delayed. The JAC believes only a CBI-level investigation can bring out the truth without any political or police influence.

This 24-hour bandh is expected to affect daily life in Manipur, including markets, roads, and transport services. But for many, this is not just a strike—it’s a fight for truth, justice, and human dignity.

People in Manipur are standing together, raising their voice peacefully against what they believe is an injustice that must not be ignored. Whether the CBI steps in or not, the people are determined to get justice for Khoisnam Sanajaoba. The coming days will tell how the government and higher authorities respond to this rising demand.
