No official notice has been released by the MK Stalin Govt on swapping the rupee symbol with the Tamil letter for ‘Ru’ while escalating confrontation with Centre.
GUWAHATI, March 13: The MK Stalin Govt in Tamil Nadu dropped the rupee symbol from the State Budget for 2025-26, and replaced it with the Tamil letter for ‘Ru’, escalating confrontation with Centre amid the three-language row.
The move, perhaps the first any state has adopted, comes in the context of the opposition of the MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government’s opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the three-language policy.
The DMK and the BJP-led central government are in a bitter confrontation over the National Education Policy mandating students in Class VIII and above to study a third language from a list of 22 options. The list of options also includes Hindi.
There has, however, been no formal notice from the MK Stalin Govt on swapping the rupee symbol with the Tamil letter.
Reports said Tamil Nadu’s refusal to implement the National Education Policy 2020 in its totality, particularly the three-language formula, has resulted in the Centre withholding Rs 573 crore in central education assistance under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
