GUWAHATI, Jan 24: Sensation prevails in Dhekiajuli town in Assam’s Sonitpur district after a Class 7 student, who was allegedly subjected to corporal punishment at school by a teacher on Jan 18, passed away at Tezpur Medical College Hospital (TMCH).
The deceased student has been identified as Aman Mahato. He was reportedly beaten at Sirajuli New Harijan School by the teacher named Uttam Bakshi Mahanta for talking with classmates during class hours, the principal of the institution said.
The student had completed his classes the day the accused teacher subjected him to corporal punishment but reportedly fell unwell two days later following which he was rushed to TMCH where he breathed his last yesterday (Jan 23).
Police have detained the accused teacher following a complaint lodged against him by parents of the deceased student.
