GUWAHATI, Jan 17: Dilip Saikia, BJP’s Lok Sabha MP representing the Darrang-Udalguri constituency, was chosen as the new Assam BJP president.
Saikia emerged as the lone candidate in the fray, paving the way for his election as the new State BJP president.
The official announcement was made at Vajpayee Bhavan, the State BJP headquarters, in Guwahati by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who is also the election observer for Assam.
Saikia replaces Bhabesh Saikia who decided against continuing as president for another term since the new president will not be able to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Assam next year as per the policy of the BJP.
Bhabesh Kalita is the MLA from Rangia, and said that he would like to continue serving the people of his constituency for another term.
Meanwhile, Kalita, who had become State BJP president in 2021, and Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma filed their nominations for the posts of national council members of the party.
