Pakistan: Islamabad under lockdown; at least seven killed as Imran Khan’s supporters clash with police

GUWAHATI, Nov 26: At least seven people – six security personnel and one protestor – were killed and dozens injured after supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan marched to the capital Islamabad and clashed with police late Monday evening.

Supporters of Imran Khan, demanding his unconditional release from prison, were stopped by the government as the Pakistan capital went into a virtual lockdown.

Tear gas cannisters were first fired at the protesters while ‘shoot-at-sight’ orders were issued as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government tried to stop the nationwide stir.

The protest march was led by Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and started on Sunday. While protesters reached Islamabad by Monday evening, it continued even today as protesters resumed their march to a strategic location of the capital.

“Four paratroopers were martyred and the army has been authorised to shoot at sight,” Pakistani English Daily ‘The Nation’ reported.
