GUWAHATI, Nov 1: Bibek Debroy, chairman of Prime Minister’s economic advisory council (EAC-PM) and a top economist, passed away today morning. He was 69.
A member of the Niti Aayog from its formation till June 5, 2019, Debroy played a massive role in shaping India’s economic policies.
One of the country’s most celebrated economists, he was educated in Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur; Presidency College, Kolkata; Delhi School of Economics; and Trinity College, Cambridge.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing awaof of Debroy saying “he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape through his works”.
“Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth,” PM Narendra Modi wrote on X.
Besides being a renowned economist, he was also known for translating the Bhagwad Gita, Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas into English.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered his condolences on the sad demise of the eminent economist.
