GUWAHATI: A new Old Age Home of the state Social Welfare Department was inaugurated in Sonapur by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday. Thirty elderly people have been shifted from Mother Old Age Home in Guwahati to the new address. With a capacity to board 60 elders, the new home is ready with all the necessary requirements.

Speaking at the occasion Dr. Sarma said, “On the completion of 100 days of the government the Social Welfare Department led by minister Ajanta Neog has come ahead with this noble deed. The good work done by our elders is a great contribution to our social life. On 15th August, I had said that such a day has arrived in which we have to keep our parents in old age homes. ”

“Some elders don’t have kids and others don’t have anyone to take care of despite having children. There are many children who have the resources to keep their parents but don’t do it due to various reasons. They are not fulfilling their responsibility and so we (government) have to keep the elders. After the Mother Old Age Home crisis I had requested minister Ajanta Neog to look into it. After meeting the elders she came back and told me that on the completion of 100 days of the government we will inaugurate this new project and accommodate some elders from there. The task has been fulfilled today,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Chief Minister also announced a Rs. 100 crore home project for youth and elderly at Boko. The work will expectedly get completed in another two years, said the chief minister.
