Guwahati: A special court on Wednesday in Guwahati has sent arrested GRP (Government Railway Police) Sub Inspector Badri Prasad Baruwati and Bikaner Jems and Jeweller owner Ram Avatar Manihari to judicial custody in the gold smuggling case.
Both the accused were in police custody for five days.
Earlier, Badri’s bail plea was rejected by the Special Court.
On June 15, Assam police seized a good amount of unaccounted gold and cash in Guwahati. The Bharalu Police seized gold worth Rs 50 lakh from two persons and Rs 8 lakh cash from one Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector.
The two accused have been identified as Manoj Shah and Aman Ali. The duo was transporting the gold from Nagaon to Guwahati when a police team caught them. On interrogating them the two revealed that they bought the gold from one GRP Officer Badri Prasad Bharti. recovered Rs. 8 lakh cash from his vehicle
Acting on the information received from the two, the Guwahati West Police detained GRP Sub-Inspector Badri Prasad Bharti who is stationed at Kamakhya Railway Station in connection with the gold recovery case. Police also recovered Rs. 8 lakh cash from his vehicle.
After detaining Badri the police raided the official residence of GRP Sub-Inspector Badri Prasad Bharti and questioned his wife Bornali Bora who is also a GRP Sub-Inspector stationed at Haibargaon, Nagaon.
The police also did raid a business establishment Bikaner Gems & Jewelry Nagaon, in connection with the case and arrested the owner Ram Avatar Manihari as Manoj Shah and Aman Ali work in this jewelry shop.
