Guwahati: At least six Maoists were killed Wednesday morning in an exchange of fire with the Greyhounds units in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district. The encounter took place at Theegalametta forest areas in Koyyuru Mandal under the Mampa Police Station jurisdiction.

Officials said the encounter occurred during a routine Greyhounds Police patrolling in the area. While a combing-and-search operation is still underway, out of the six killed, two are women, and several others escaped. An AK-47, one SLR, one Carbine, three .303 rifles and one country-made revolver were recovered from the scene. A police statement said that among those killed is a senior Maoist leader.

Combing and patrolling have been intensified in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana due to reports that several Maoists, who are infected with Covid-19 are sneaking in to avail treatment at hospitals. On Tuesday, there was an exchange of fire between Maoists and Odisha police near Kulabeda village near the Malkangiri-Koraput district’s border. The Maoists managed to escape from the scene and are believed to have crossed into AP.
