Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomes EC’s decision to ban victory processions

GUWAHATI: Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision banning the victory processions on or after  the counting of votes on May 2 due to the COVID-19 surge across India.

Taking to Twitter, Sarma wrote, “The decision by

to ban celebrations & processions after results are announced on May 2 is welcome. In view of the prevailing grim circumstances, I urge all party karyakartas & well-wishers to follow utmost restraints and stay vigilant.”

The order issued by the ECI states no victory procession will be permissible after the counting of votes for Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry assembly polls on May 2.

“No victory procession after the counting on 2nd May shall be permissible. Not more than 2 persons shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate or his/her authorized representative receive the certificate of election from the Returning Officer concerned,” the official notification stated.
