GUWAHATI, March 25: A 5-year-old minor girl died after construction material, said to be a stone slab, from a nearby under-construction building fell on her at Chhatribari in Guwahati on Monday evening.
Papia Ghosh, the deceased, was inside their rented accommodation when the huge slab of stone fell from the under-construction apartment named Golden Heights.
The incident took place around 5 pm on Monday.
People of the locality alleged that the builders did not cover the boundary of the building due to which the stone slab fell on the house where the minor lived along with her mother and elder sister.
The minor was fatherless and was being brought up by her mother.
“The builders did not conform to safety measures and did not cover the boundary of the building as a result of which the tragic incident took place,” a resident of the locality told News Live.
Another person further alleged that the builders admitted the minor, who was seriously injured at first, to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) after initially taking her to the Neemcare Hospital since the cost of hospitalisation would be more at Neemcare.
“The builders are solely to blame for the little girl’s death. First they did not put any covering around the construction site. Secondly after the incident took place, what they did was that they reportedly admitted her to GMCH although she was first taken to Neemcare Hospital. There are allegation that they did this since the hospitalisation cost at Neemcare Hospitals would have been more,” the neighbour stated.
The minor, reports said, later died at GMCH.

People of the locality have demanded that strict action be taken against the builders for flouting construction safety guidelines and that adequate compensation be given to the family of the deceased minor.
