5 constituencies to face election in six months, says Assam BJP chief

Guwahati: There is widespread talk in Assam’s political circles that more leaders from the Congress party will follow the footsteps of Rupjyoti Kurmi and join the BJP in coming days. In the midst of these speculations, state BJP president and minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass revealed that by-elections for 5 constituencies will be held in Assam in the next six months. His statement has created a stir in the political arena.

According to BJP state President Dass, by-elections will be held in Tamulpur, Gosaigaon, Mariani constituencies, as well as two more constituencies in Assam in the next six months.

It is pertinent to note that by-elections are certain to be held in the three constituencies in view of the death of Tamulpur constituency MLA Leho Ram Boro, Gosaigaon constituency MLA Majendra Narjari and Mariani constituency after MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi stepped down as MLA and joined BJP.

But state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass remarks that by-elections will be held in five constituencies is based on inputs that more Congress MLAs might join the BJP. President Dass did not explicitly mention that but his statement was made in the context of Congress MLAs communicating to join the BJP soon after Rupjyoti Kurmi left the Congress. Also, a certain Congress MLA from Barak Valley met him at his office and expressed interest in switching sides.

On the other hand, the Majuli assembly seat will also become vacant if former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is inducted into the Union cabinet. Accordingly, by-elections are possible in only four constituencies in the state. But in the case of by-elections in 5 constituencies, one more MLA will have to vacant his or her present constituency.  Now, who is this MLA is a big question the answer of which we will all come to know in some time.
