Singer Zubeen Garg, heartthrob of millions of Assamese music lovers, has jumped into the controversy over the alleged insult to veteran singer Diganta Bharati, who was unceremoniously told to leave the stage by the Chandmari Bihu committee for allegedly taking to the stage in a jeans trouser, asking the Bihu committee to tender an unconditional apology to Bharati over the unfortunate incident.

“What happened should not have taken place with an artiste. Diganta Bharati had gone there as a guest and not to perform. The Chandmari Bihu committee should tender him an apology. And it’s an order and not a request,” Zubeen Garg said while performing at another Bihu cultural night in Nalbari.

What happened at Chandmari Bihu Function on Wednesday Night?

According to allegations levelled by Diganta Bharati and his wife Bhaswati, a member of the Bihu committee allegedly snatched the microphone from the eminent singer and music composer, for allegedly taking to the stage in a jeans trouser, after committee members invited him to the state to honour and felicitate him although it was his wife and not Diganta Bharati who was scheduled to have performed there.

Diganta Bharati alleged that after the felicitation was over, committee members requested him to sing a song or two for the crowd that had assembled in many thousands for the cultural evening.

Bharati said although he was not scheduled to perform at Chandmari, he agreed to honour the committee members’ request.

It was at this point when he was on the stage performing a duet with his that a member of the Bihu committee who, Diganta Bharati and his wife Bhaswati alleged was under the influence of alcohol, came up to the stage and snatched the microphone from him and asked him to leave the stage, reportedly for being dressed in a casual trouser.

A video of a heated altercation between Bharati and his wife with other committee members broke out as they sought an apology from the committee members for the incident that took place before thousands of people.

NO QUESTION OF TENDERING AN APOLOGY: PUB GUWAHATI BIHU SANMILAN

The Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan, while responding to the accusations, said they did not insult Diganta Bharati and added that there was no question of tendering an apology to the singer.

Simanta Thakuria, who allegedly insulted the veteran singer, told News Live they did not insulted Bharati and hence there was no question of seeking an apology.

He also said that the committee will provide Diganta Bharati’s wife Bhaswati, who had entered into a contract with them to perform on Wednesday night (April 16), with the money that was earlier agreed upon as per the contract but was adamant at not tendering an apology maintaining they did not insult the singer and his wife in any way.

Now with Zubeen Garg asking Chandmari Bihu committee to tender an apology to Diganta Bharati, it remains to be seen as to how committee members react to the fresh development.
